ABOUT

FRONTENAC

Frontenac, Kansas is a small town of around 3,400 people in Crawford County, sitting just northwest of Pittsburg. If you're looking at homes for sale in Frontenac, KS, you're looking at small-town living with easy access to Pittsburg's shopping, hospitals, and Pittsburg State University just a few minutes down the road.

At Burton Real Estate, we work Frontenac every day — not just as an area on a map, but as a place we know block by block. Whether you're buying your first home, selling a property you've lived in for years, or looking at land and new construction, we'll give it to you straight and get the deal done.

Frontenac's housing stock is a mix of established single-family homes on walkable streets, along with newer construction on the edges of town for buyers who want more space. Because Frontenac sits right next to Pittsburg, buyers often compare the two — Frontenac is smaller and more residential, while Pittsburg's shopping, dining and amenities are just minutes away.

COMMUNITY DIRECTORY

FRONTENAC

Frontenac has real history behind it. The city was founded in 1886 as a coal mining town, and that heritage still shows up in the community today — it's part of why Frontenac has such deep Italian and Slavic roots, brought by the immigrant families who came to work the mines. That history is even the backdrop for Clare Vanderpool's Newbery Medal-winning novel Moon Over Manifest, which draws on Frontenac's own story.

That heritage isn't just history — you can taste it and visit it:

Pallucca's Italian Meat Market & Deli (207 E. McKay St.) — a Frontenac institution for house-cured Italian meats, cheeses, and made-to-order lunches and dinners.

Barto's Idle Hour Steakhouse & Lounge (201 S. Santa Fe St.) — one of the stops on the Southeast Kansas Fried Chicken Trail, serving family-style chicken dinners since the early 1950s.

McKay Street Coffeehouse (200 E. McKay St.) — a family-run coffee shop inside the new Frontenac Public Library, pouring espresso from locally roasted beans, with a fireplace, patio seating, and board games.

Frontenac Public Library & Heritage Hall Museum (200 E. McKay St.) — Frontenac's first-ever public library, opened in November 2025 after a $4.5 million gift from longtime residents Richard and Jeanette Tavella. The museum next door recreates the town's original storefronts as exhibit space.

Rotary Park — playground, shelter house, basketball court, and pickleball courts

City Park — seasonal fishing pond

Frontenac Recreation Center and community swimming pool

Festa Italiana — the town's annual festival celebrating its European heritage
