Scammon is a small Cherokee County city of about 380 residents (2020 census), about 8 miles north of Columbus, the county seat. It takes its name from the four Scammon brothers, who opened the first coal mine there, and it was once one of the busiest coal shipping points in the region. Railroad history is still close by: the Heart of the Heartlands group has restored the old Carona depot nearby as a museum.
