Fort Scott is the county seat of Bourbon County, home to about 7,600 residents (2020 census). It grew up around a U.S. Army fort garrisoned from 1842 to 1853 and named for Gen. Winfield Scott; the town was laid out in 1857. Today the Fort Scott National Historic Site and the Fort Scott National Cemetery draw visitors from across the region. The city sits where US-69 meets US-54, and it is the hometown of photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks.
